Ukraine and Suriname established diplomatic relations on September 20, 2006. The relations between the two countries began to move into a practical plane only in the 2020s.

Suriname supports the position adopted by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) group on the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation of Suriname in 2020-2025 Albert Ramdin emphasized in an interview with the publication "De Ware Tijd" on the eve of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation: "We have firmly stated that the sovereignty of the country must be guaranteed, that it must be respected and that there must be no interference. Thus, the self-determination of the country must remain guaranteed." However, regarding the possibility of imposing sanctions against the aggressor country, A. Ramdin said that Suriname will take a position only when international sanctions are imposed by a United Nations (UN) resolution.

Suriname supported the UNGA resolutions "Aggression against Ukraine" (03.03.22) and "Humanitarian consequences of aggression against Ukraine" (24.03.22).

On October 12, 2022, Suriname supported the UNGA resolution "Territorial integrity of Ukraine. Protection of the principles of the UN Charter".

On November 16, 2022, during the vote on the resolution "Providing legal remedies and reparations in connection with the aggression against Ukraine", Suriname abstained.

Suriname supported the UNGA Resolution “Principles of the UN Charter Underlying a Comprehensive, Just and Sustainable Peace in Ukraine” (23.02.23) and became its co-author. On April 26, 2023, Suriname supported the resolution “On Cooperation between the UN and the Council of Europe”, which called the Russian Federation an aggressor.

Suriname participated in the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland in June 2024 (Ambassador of Suriname in Geneva) and joined the Joint Communiqué based on its results.

On December 3, 2025, Suriname supported the UNGA Resolution “Return of Ukrainian Children”. The country abstained during the vote on December 11 on the UNGA Resolution “Strengthening International Cooperation and Coordination of Efforts to Study, Mitigate and Minimize the Consequences of the Chernobyl Disaster”.

On February 24, 2026, Suriname supported the UNGA resolution “Supporting Lasting Peace in Ukraine”.
