In his speech before the signature, José Manuel Barroso called the Agreement a "turning point in the eastern partnership policy of Europe". "The document creates a basis for the further political association and economic integration," he emphasized.
The President of the European Commission called the reformation of legislation, public administration, introduction of principles of efficiency and transparency and fight against corruption the key elements for successful implementation of the Agreement. "We believe in open society and open economy," he said.
José Manuel Barroso also emphasized that the Agreement shall in no way affect partnership relations with neighbor-states. "This Agreement is not directed against someone," he stressed.
President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy called the signature a "historic day for the whole Europe". "In Kyiv and everywhere people gave their hearts to closer ties with the European Union. We will not forget that," he said.
"Common political and economic ties will bring greater stability and prosperity to the whole European continent. Such cooperation must be based on general values – democracy, human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law. The European Union will be on your side all the time. It will provide political, technical and financial assistance," Herman Van Rompuy emphasized.
"Our general goal is your integration in the EU market which is the richest and the biggest one," he stressed.
Herman Van Rompuy also underlined the importance of solving "very difficult security tasks" by Ukraine. "The EU is on your side," he said assuring of the support and solidarity of the EU in the issue of territorial integrity of Ukraine.
