Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin sent a letter to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon requesting him to extend the mandate of the Monitoring Mission for Human Rights for the next three months period. The Mission has been working in Ukraine since March 15, 2014 at the invitation of the Government.
The main objective of the Mission is to evaluate the human rights situation on the ground, paying particular attention to the Eastern and Southern Ukraine, including the ARC, and to prepare relevant reports of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
In his letter to the UN Secretary General, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister expressed interest in the continued presence of the UN human rights mechanisms and their support of the processes in promoting and protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms in Ukraine.
The particular attention is required to pay to the situation in the eastern Ukraine as well as in the Crimea, where the Russian occupation has caused, according to the international experts, gross violations of human rights.
