On the eve of Christmas, scouts handed the Peace Light of Bethlehem to President Petro Poroshenko. Ukrainian scouts convey the light from the Holy Land to the President as a sign of peace and welfare for all Ukrainians for the second year in a row.
“We are glad to have an opportunity today to convey the Peace Light of Bethlehem to you, to your house, for this light is the key to unification of the whole Ukrainian community. All Ukrainians who light a candle at the festive table will be united by the common dream about the better future of our state,” head of the organization Olha Herus said. According to her, scouts create the environment to educate good citizens of our state. Today, a lot of scouts guard the borders of our state.
The President noted that the scout movement was not only the Ukrainian movement, but also the association of foreign Ukrainians and Diaspora that plays a crucial role in the creation of extremely powerful global solidarity.
The Head of State reminded that the day before, the EU Council had adopted an important decision to continue sanctions against Russia, the country-aggressor. “They said that Europe is not with us, that Europe is not united, that Europe doesn’t support Ukraine. Everything is exactly the opposite. And it wouldn’t be possible without the Ukrainian solidarity all over the world,” Petro Poroshenko emphasized.
Petro Poroshenko noted the role of scouts who had been the first to defend the state from the aggressor. “A lot of scouts joined the army, volunteer battalions to personally defend the Homeland,” the President said.
He gave an example of tragic events in Syria, particularly the actions of the aggressor in Aleppo: “We see now what would have happened if we hadn’t had a powerful army, powerful support of the nation and volunteers”.
Petro Poroshenko underlined the role of the scout movement in the education of young patriots and noted that such traditions must be spread all over Ukraine. “It is a school of patriots,” he said.
The Head of State noted the role of scouts in social and political life of the country. He recalled such scouts like executive director of Transparency International Ukraine Yaroslav Yurchyshyn - “organization that helps change Ukraine and fights against corruption” and Ms. Ulana Suprun who reforms the healthcare sphere.
Petro Poroshenko expressed gratitude to the scouts and promised that the icon-lamp with the Peace Light of Bethlehem would remain in his office.
