President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko held a phone conversation with President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso.
The interlocutors discussed the situation in the Donbas and the initiative of the Ukrainian President on conducting the international humanitarian mission for Luhansk under the aegis of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
Petro Poroshenko declared readiness to multilateral international discussion of the settlement of the situation in the Donbas in Normandy or Geneva format. The Head of State would like the "Ukrainian issue" to be duly considered and included into the agenda of the next meeting of the European Council of August 30.
José Manuel Barroso commended the given initiative and the clear position of Ukraine that it should be conducted under the international law. He also informed that the European Union was ready to allocate EUR 2.5 million for humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. At the same time, he called to establish a special coordinating mechanism for the provision of humanitarian assistance and resettlement of migrants.
The Ukrainian President assured the President of the European Commission of his devotion to the implementation of the peace plan under the following principles: bilateral ceasefire, monitoring and verification of the OSCE, liberation of hostages, control over the Ukrainian-Russian border aimed at preventing the inflow of militants and arms, political dialogue without any additional conditions.
The parties also discussed the schedule of implementing the Association Agreement with the EU.
In addition, the interlocutors negotiated the issue of energy cooperation and restoration of gas negotiations in trilateral format EU-Ukraine-Russia.
Petro Poroshenko invited José Manuel Barroso to visit Kyiv. The President of the European Commission expressed gratitude for the invitation and informed that he considered the opportunity of visiting Kyiv to participate in the international conference "Yalta European Strategy" at the beginning of September.
