The 195th session of UNESCO Executive Board ended its work on October 30, 2014. During the last plenary session the Board adopted draft resolutions, approved earlier by its subsidiary commissions.

Thus, resolution "Follow-up of the situation in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea (Ukraine)", examined by the Commission on Program and External Relations on the 23rd of October was finally approved by UNESCO.

While defending the Ukrainian draft in the framework of the Commission, the Head of the delegation of Ukraine, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Sergiy Kyslytsya emphasized the significance of the resolution, based on the fundamental principles of international law. The head of the Ukrainian delegation expressed confidence that the approval of this document will have a long-lasting impact on the future of UNESCO.

A member of the official delegation of Ukraine, Head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, Mr.Refat Chubarov drew the attention of UNESCO Member States to numerous human rights violations on the peninsula, particularly in the areas of education, culture, religion and freedom of expression, as well as oppression of the indigenous peoples of Crimea.

According to the resolution that de facto recognizes the Autonomous Republic of Crimea as a part of Ukraine the Director General will have to report back on results of the monitoring in the fields of UNESCO’s competence to the 196th session of the UNESCO Executive Board.
