President Petro Poroshenko says that the profession of diplomat is symbolic for Ukraine. "The protection of Ukraine's interests has always been the task of diplomats. Now, this work is increasingly important," the President has noted in the Diplomatic Academy delivering a speech on the occasion of the Day of the Ukrainian Diplomacy.
"I am proud of the way the Ukrainian diplomats defend the state and fulfill their professional duties. I am proud of the way we defend each meter of our land and mobilize the whole world to support Ukraine. Ukraine has never enjoyed such level of support in the world! It is your work and I am grateful to you for that," the President said.
The Head of State has noted that the evidence of the efficient work of diplomats and the entire Ukrainian nation was the attitude of the world community to the events in Ukraine as to the issue of global security. "Each country that supports Ukraine today defends global security and its own future," the President has emphasized.
The main task for the Ukrainian diplomacy today is to ensure the unity of the whole world in the Ukrainian issue, as stated by the President. According to the Head of State, his recent visits to Canada, USA, Australia and Poland have reaffirmed the support of Ukraine. The President has informed that in 6 months, he had held more than 110 international meetings and almost 200 phone conversations at the highest level. The phone conversation with President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and video conference in Normandy format will be conducted shortly.
According to the Head of State, Ukraine faces two challenges: security (necessity of ensuring constant peace in Ukraine) and economic challenge, which provides for the involvement of global experience of reforms. The work of the Ukrainian diplomats is essential for that.
Mentioning the importance of the Association Agreement implementation, the President has emphasized: "Ukraine has a year to carry out qualitative preparation and use the opportunities of deep and comprehensive free trade area". Diplomats must help the Ukrainian producers enter the European level. The President has also noted the inadmissibility of delaying the establishment of visa-free regime for Ukrainians.
The Head of State has also informed that the draft law on diplomatic service was currently being elaborated.
